Motion 16.
I ask the Director of Services, Roads and Infrastructure to provide for additional public lighting in Drumsna along Crowhill. I will ask that the money would be provided from the Development Contributions paid by the number of new residents along Crow Hill. There is no existing public lighting in this area of the village and the lack of any illumination is dangerous for residents, particularly school children as during the winter months they have to walk to and from their homes on Crowhill, in the dark, to Quay street where they access the school bus.
REPLY: While the need for lighting in the area in question is desirable there is no funding available in the immediate future for these works. A proposal and costing of these works will be provided and the works can be considered for a future safety scheme.
Comments at meeting by Councillor Sinead Guckian – 07/02/2011. It is extremely important that we have a plan and a time frame to address this matter. While I am aware of the reduction in spending, there has been a number of new builds within the village and therefore development contributions have been made to the Council. These moneys must be used, in addition to connecting to services, to provide the required infrastructure for the village. The lighting requirements for Crowhill are a basic requirement for residents. A number of years ago when we didnt have the development contribution scheme to asisst with funding and funds were tight, we were able to take innovative measures to find away of financing similar items, an example was securing funding for the lighting on Quay street and the rebuilding of the footpaths, we did this through the Task funding that was available at the time. We must be able to be more innovative in these times too and investigate any possible funding mechanisms to ensure that we dont fall behind in providing basic infrastructure. I welcome the fact that the Council will cost the project as soon as possible and in the interim I will also investigate possible alternative funding sources.
Questions
I ask the Carrick on Shannon, Area Engineer what actions were taken, as per my pre-Christmas requests, to protect the old drinking well adjacent to locally known Peyton Estate on the Castlecarra Rd, Carrick on Shannon. I raised concerns with regard to the engineering works that were in progress at the time, in the area and requested that special attention would be given to the drinking well, which has historical importance.
REPLY: The works have not impacted on the well in question.
Comments by CouncillorSinead Guckian “I welcome the fact that the “well” was protected and I am also pleased that the on going works on the cycle lanes around Carrick on Shannon” are progressing and that already many residents are using the lanes for leisure and for traveling around the town”.
I ask the Director of Services, Roads and Infrastructure what is the up to date position with regard to addressing the dangerous state of the “cut-away” hill, on the N4 Dublin Road, Correen, Carrick on Shannon. It is my understanding from discussions last year, that Leitrim County Council had advised the NRA of the soil movement and were awaiting NRA approval and funding to address same.
REPLY : Remedial works at this embankment will be carried out in the near future.
Comments by Councillor Sinead Guckian “It is important that this work is completed as soon as possible, as the movement of land is considerable and a number of people has raised concerns over the safety of vehicles travelling past on the N4″
