I am a Native of Drumsna, Co Leitrim and I was educated at Annaduff National School, Marymount College Carrick on Shannon and the Institute of Technology Sligo.
In 1991 I was elected Vice-President of the Students Union of the Institute of Technology Sligo. I Graduated from the Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Computing. I also graduated from the Irish Institute of Purchasing & Materials Management and recently graduated once again from the Institute of Technology Sligo this time with a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art.
In June 1999 I ran for the first time in the local elections and was elected to Leitrim County Council. The seat that I was elected to had previously been held by my father, the late, Michael Guckian for over twenty-five years and prior to that by my late Grandfather, Patrick for twenty-seven years. In July 2001 I was elected Chairperson of Leitrim County Council and it was an honor to serve in this position for the period of one year.
In the 2004 Local Election I was returned to office for another five years and was once again elected to hold the position of Cathaoirleach of the Council for the term of office 2006-2007.
In both 2009 and 2014 I was reelected to the Council and I am currently continuing my work, which aims to protect and represent the interests of my communities.
Along with the many statutory bodies and organizations that I am a member of, I am involved in many community and voluntary groups, which include local Tidy Towns Committees, GAA, Comhaltas and I am also a voluntary director for the Leitrim Design House.
